Madison Square Theatre, Theatre building in Manhattan, US
Madison Square Theatre was a theatre building located on 24th Street between Sixth Avenue and Broadway in Manhattan. It featured a double-stage design that allowed stagehands to prepare the next scene while the current one was being performed.
The theatre opened in 1865 after being converted from a gold trading building during the Civil War era. It operated for roughly 40 years before closing in 1909.
The theatre presented approximately 250 different plays during its operation, including productions like Hazel Kirke that shaped American theatrical traditions.
The theatre featured early air conditioning to keep audiences comfortable during performances. It also had electric signaling systems to help conductors coordinate the show smoothly.
Actor-director Steele Mackaye invented a mechanical double-stage system that cut scene changes down to under two minutes. This was a major advance for theatre production at the time.
