Watervliet Shaker Historic District, First Shaker settlement site in Colonie, United States
The Watervliet Shaker Historic District is a historic settlement containing twenty-two surviving structures from the Shaker movement in North America. At its center stands a meetinghouse built in 1848 with separate entrances for brothers, sisters, and ministers to maintain their distinct roles during worship.
Mother Ann Lee established this settlement in 1776 with seven followers, making it the first Shaker community in America. Leadership later shifted to the Mount Lebanon community as the movement expanded and reorganized.
The settlement was divided into four independent families named Church, North, West, and South, each with separate living quarters but sharing worship spaces. This arrangement shaped how daily life and spiritual practice intertwined for residents.
The site is located in Watervliet near Albany and welcomes visitors interested in learning about Shaker history and daily life. It is helpful to check opening hours before visiting, as the grounds are not open every day of the week.
The Watervliet Shakers pioneered the commercial seed industry by introducing small paper envelopes for garden seeds. This simple but clever packaging method became the standard for seed distribution and remains influential today.
