Founded on June 7, 1987, through a legislative act by the Virginia government and District of Columbia government to create a sustainable entity for airport supervision.
The authority fosters regional connectivity by managing transportation infrastructure that links different communities across Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.
Operating funds come from aircraft landing fees, terminal rentals, concessions, and parking revenues, allowing the authority to function without direct taxpayer support.
The authority expanded its role in 2008 to operate the Dulles Toll Road and manage the Silver Line Metrorail extension project.
