Navy – Merchant Marine Memorial, Maritime memorial in Lady Bird Johnson Park, Washington, D.C.

The Navy - Merchant Marine Memorial features an aluminum sculpture depicting a cresting wave with seven seagulls, measuring 35 feet tall and 30 feet wide.

Congress approved the memorial construction in 1924, following World War I, when Marion Thurber Denby established the Navy and Marine Memorial Association.

The inscription honors individuals from the Navy, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, and NOAA who lost their lives performing duties at sea.

Visitors can access the memorial through the Mount Vernon Trail, which provides walking and cycling paths along the Potomac River.

The monument stands as the first aluminum memorial structure in Washington, D.C., resting on a base made of green granite from New Hampshire.
