Clarkton Bridge, Historic bridge in Charlotte County, Virginia, US.
Clarkton Bridge was a steel structure crossing the Staunton River in Charlotte County, Virginia, consisting of two main truss spans with multiple approach sections connecting each bank. Its design combined proven engineering methods with local needs for river crossing.
Virginia Bridge & Iron Company built this bridge in 1902 to meet growing transportation needs in the region. It remained functional for more than a century until its demolition in 2018.
The structure earned recognition on both the National Register of Historic Places and as a Virginia Historic Landmark in 2006.
The former bridge was located near Nathalie and was easy to identify by its truss structure when it existed. The site today is mainly of interest to those researching local history, as the structure no longer stands.
This bridge was the only one in Virginia using steel cylinder supports for its piers and designed specifically for highway traffic. This combined approach was unusual in the state at that time.
