South Boston Historic District

The South Boston Historic District contains 594 buildings and 7 structures, spanning 301 acres along Railroad Avenue, Ferry Street, and Main Street.

Founded in 1854, the district served as a commercial center with tobacco warehouses, including facilities operated by R.J. Reynolds and Liggett-Meyer tobacco companies.

The district presents Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, and Italianate architectural styles through its churches, banks, schools, and commercial buildings.

Visitors can access the district through guided walking tours that showcase notable buildings like the C.H. Friend School and Planters and Merchants Bank.

The Halifax Cotton Mill and multiple tobacco prizeries within the district demonstrate the industrial heritage of 19th-century Virginia manufacturing.
