Staunton River State Park

Staunton River State Park is a 2,400-acre area along the Dan and Staunton rivers with woodlands, meadows, and shoreline for exploration and outdoor recreation. The landscape includes trails, fishing spots, boat launches, and picnic areas spread throughout the property.

The park was established in 1936 by the Virginia Conservation Commission, with the Civilian Conservation Corps constructing the original buildings and infrastructure. This early development created the foundation that remains central to the site today.

The park serves as a gathering place for astronomy and nature education, where visitors attend programs about wildlife and the region's natural systems. These activities help people connect with the outdoors and understand their local environment.

The park offers overnight options with furnished cabins, tent sites, and an equestrian camp, all requiring advance reservations for visits. It is best to book ahead, especially during warmer months when accommodations fill quickly.

The site holds certification as an International Dark Sky Park, providing excellent conditions for astronomy without light pollution interference. This designation makes it one of the few places in the region where the night sky can be viewed in full clarity.
