Hopewell Big Woods

Hopewell Big Woods is a large protected forest spanning southeastern Pennsylvania with rolling terrain and natural streams throughout. The area features multiple walking paths and access points distributed across the landscape for visitors to explore.

In the 1700s and 1800s, timber from these woods was processed into charcoal to fuel iron furnaces, including the nearby Hopewell Furnace. This industrial use shaped the region's economy and landscape for generations.

The forest has long served as a gathering place for local communities, and today visitors find evidence of past settlement throughout the landscape. Historic sites scattered across the land tell stories of how people once lived and worked in these woods.

Visitor information and maps are available at various locations throughout the area to help with exploration. Following the marked trails is the best way to navigate the landscape safely and see different parts of the forest.

The area is designated as a Night Skies Conservation Area with measures in place to reduce artificial light pollution. This allows visitors to experience the night sky with far less interference than in most populated areas.
