Queen Street Baptist Church, Protestant church in Norfolk, United States
Description
Queen Street Baptist Church is a brick structure with tall Gothic-style pointed windows and a distinctive spire that rises prominently from its main facade. The building was enlarged with an educational wing during the mid-1900s, creating a larger complex for the congregation's needs.
History
The congregation formed in 1884 when formerly enslaved people established their own place of worship in Norfolk. The Late Gothic Revival building that stands today was constructed in the early 1900s under the direction of architect Rossell Edward Mitchell.
Culture
This church became a gathering place for the African American community where faith, learning, and social bonds were strengthened over generations. Visitors can experience this sense of community during services and programs held throughout the week.
Practical
The church is located on Brambleton Avenue and easy to find in Norfolk's urban landscape. Services take place on Sundays, and visitors interested in viewing the interior should check ahead to understand current access policies.
