Battelle Darby Creek Metropolitan Park is a large nature preserve in Franklin County featuring forests, prairies, and wetlands. Two creeks flow through the area, Big Darby and Little Darby, both designated as State and National Scenic Rivers.
Park development began in 1950 with the acquisition of about 119 acres. The land later expanded through major support and contributions from foundations and donors.
The Nature Center displays the diversity of local plants and animals through interactive exhibits. Visitors can see how different species coexist in the surrounding environment.
More than 20 kilometers of trails wind through different habitats, with picnic areas for breaks. Depending on the season, activities like cross-country skiing and canoeing are available.
A free-roaming bison herd lives in two large enclosed pastures. These animals give visitors a glimpse of the large creatures that once shaped the region.
