King Gambrinus, Aluminum sculpture in Milwaukee, United States

King Gambrinus is an aluminum sculpture standing in the courtyard of Best Place on West Juneau Avenue, holding a beer stein raised toward the sky. The figure weighs approximately 900 pounds and is crafted entirely from metal, giving it a gleaming, modern appearance.

The sculpture was created in 1967 to replace a wooden figure from 1857 that depicted the same subject. This aluminum version preserves the memory of a European brewing tradition that had deep roots in Milwaukee.

The sculpture represents Milwaukee's deep bond with brewing and captures the occupational pride that shaped generations of local brewers. Visitors can feel this connection to the city's artisanal traditions when standing before the figure.

The sculpture is located in a courtyard within a historic brewery building and is easily accessible from outside. Keep in mind that access is limited to certain days and hours, so it is helpful to check timing before visiting.

The statue disappeared for 14 years before being discovered in a lunch room of an Illinois office park, sitting next to a foosball table. This unusual chapter in its history shows how even important local symbols can vanish and resurface in unexpected places.
