Mahatma Gandhi Memorial, Bronze memorial in MacArthur Square, Milwaukee, United States.
The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial is a bronze statue located in MacArthur Square, in front of the Milwaukee County Courthouse. The figure shows Gandhi mid-stride, carrying a staff and dressed in traditional clothing, glasses, and sandals.
The statue was unveiled on October 5, 2002, during a ceremony that included a peace march and speeches by local officials and Indian Ambassador Lalit Mansingh. It was created by sculptor Gautam Pal.
The memorial was funded by the Wisconsin Coalition of Asian Indian Organizations, a group bringing together 16 community organizations representing the Indian community in Milwaukee. Visitors often leave flowers or small offerings at the base, making it a living point of gathering for the local South Asian community.
The statue stands directly in front of the Milwaukee County Courthouse, between two doors labeled Truth and Justice, making it easy to find without a map. It is accessible at any time and fits naturally into a walk through the civic center area.
The statue faces east, toward downtown Milwaukee and Lake Michigan, an orientation said to point symbolically toward Gandhi's spiritual homeland. This detail is easy to miss but gives a quiet sense of meaning to where the figure stands.
