Washington Monument, Bronze memorial statue in downtown Milwaukee, United States
Washington Monument is a bronze statue in downtown Milwaukee depicting George Washington dressed in his Continental Army uniform. The base features multiple bronze figures gazing upward at the central portrait.
The statue was created in 1885 by sculptor Richard Henry Park and became Milwaukee's first public artwork. Elizabeth Plankinton funded the project through a generous donation.
The name honors the nation's first president and his military leadership. Visitors recognize it as a civic landmark that connects the city to American founding ideals.
The statue is located at Wisconsin Avenue and 9th Street, close to the Milwaukee Public Library and Marquette University campus. The site offers easy access and sits among other important neighborhood landmarks.
Between 2016 and 2018, the monument underwent complete restoration that transformed its surface from green patina to dark bronze. This extensive conservation work returned the artwork to its original appearance.
