Stonum is a colonial brick house in New Castle with two and a half stories and a gabled roof. The building has a four-bay facade, original pine flooring, and a nine-foot entrance.
The house was built in 1730 and served as a country retreat for George Read, a Delaware Senator. Read signed both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.
The house displays architectural elements typical of wealthy colonial families in the 18th century. The rooms with their fireplaces and carved woodwork reflect the craftsmanship of that era.
The house sits on half an acre of land on Washington Avenue and offers good visibility of the floor plan. Visitors should expect varying ceiling heights and navigate stairs with care.
The kitchen wing is the oldest section and comes from an earlier building phase. The main block has an unusual center hall with the staircase positioned against the right wall.
