College Hall, central building of the campus of the Vermont College of Fine Arts in Montpelier, U.S. state of Vermont
College Hall is a historic university building on the campus of the Vermont College of Fine Arts in Montpelier. The four-story structure displays French Second Empire style with a characteristic mansard roof, twin towers, and eleven bays across its facade, with the three central bays projecting outward and featuring large round-arch windows.
The building was constructed from 1868 to 1872 as a seminary for the Vermont Methodist Conference to train religious leaders. The hilltop location was chosen for its proximity to the railroad and state capitol, following its previous use as a Civil War military hospital and later as a racetrack and fairgrounds site.
The building sits on Seminary Hill, offering good views over Montpelier with the downtown area easily walkable from the campus. The site is publicly accessible and provides ample space to explore the historic architecture and green grounds surrounding the main structure.
The building features a five-story mansard roof structure with decorative modillions, an architectural detail rarely seen in Vermont buildings. Visitors often overlook these fine roof details that distinguish it from other structures of its era.
