Ariel Rios Federal Building, Federal government building in NoMa, United States
The Ariel Rios Federal Building is a government office located in the NoMa neighborhood and houses the headquarters of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The structure features modern safety systems integrated into its operational design.
The building opened in 2008 as part of an effort to centralize federal agency operations in Northeast Washington. It marked an important expansion of government presence in a developing part of the city.
The building was named in 2016 to honor an ATF Special Agent who gave his life in service, making it a memorial to his sacrifice. This naming reflects how government spaces can carry the stories of those who served.
This is a secure government facility with restricted public access for operational security, so it is best viewed from the outside. The area around it is accessible during daylight hours when you can appreciate the building and the surroundings.
The design comes from architect Moshe Safdie, known for landmark government and public spaces worldwide. The project was one of the first major developments that sparked the transformation of the NoMa neighborhood.
