Helmick Mill Covered Bridge, Historic covered bridge in Deerfield Township, US.
Helmick Mill Covered Bridge spans Island Run using a kingpost truss system beneath red-painted wooden walls. The structure was built to connect farmland and mills on either side of the creek in rural Ohio.
Samuel Price built this bridge in 1867 to connect the mills operated by Joseph Helmick on either side of Island Run. The structure later received major repairs that restored its original features while strengthening the framework.
The bridge earned its place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999, representing 19th-century engineering methods in rural Ohio.
The bridge is accessed by Township Road 269 near Deerfield Township with parking available close by. Visitors walking across should move carefully as the wooden deck can be uneven in places.
The bridge was built for just 872 dollars in 1867, making it a remarkably affordable engineering solution for the time. This low cost helped establish it as a practical choice for connecting the mills across the creek.
