Historic Campbell Building, Historic department store in Shelby, North Carolina
Historic Campbell Building is a commercial structure in Shelby, North Carolina, spanning multiple levels with original tin ceilings, wooden staircases, and a preserved mezzanine featuring ornate railings. The ground floor and mezzanine now contain the Greenbrook Design Center, while upper levels operate as the Uptown Indigo event venue.
The building was completed in 1927 and served as Campbell's Department Store, the fourth location opened by successful merchants Reuben Edgar Campbell and J. Ogburn Lutz. It represented a mark of commercial success in the region during the prosperity of that era.
The building displays the craftsmanship of local North Carolina workers through its carefully designed elements like the decorated mezzanine railings and wooden staircases. Visitors can still see this skilled handiwork throughout the space today.
The building now houses a design center on the lower level and operates as an event venue on the upper floors, with both spaces accessible to visitors. Those interested in seeing the architectural details up close should visit during operating hours.
The structure underwent extensive restoration between 2015 and 2018, during which original wood floors and pressed tin ceilings were carefully brought back to their former condition. This careful work allowed many original features to shine in their restored state.
