International Student House of Washington, D.C.

The International Student House is a residence in a Tudor mansion on R Street housing about 96 students from around the world. The facility offers dining services, common study areas, and sits within walking distance of many educational institutions and city resources.

This residence was founded in 1936 by Quakers to provide housing for students and relocated to its current address in 1946. Additional buildings were added over time, expanding the facilities and the organization's capacity to serve more residents.

The residence hosts regular events where residents share their traditions and celebrate holidays together from around the world. These gatherings create spaces where different cultural perspectives come alive and residents learn from one another.

The residence provides meals at set times and offers shared spaces for study groups and socializing. The building is easily accessible by public transit and located in a central residential neighborhood near shops and services.

This house was created during a time of severe discrimination and provided shelter for international students who were denied housing elsewhere. That founding purpose continues to shape how the organization approaches inclusion and welcoming people from all backgrounds.
