Daniel Robert House

The Daniel Robert House is a Gothic Revival home in Somerville with pointed roof peaks, decorative details, and vertical lines across its three-acre grounds. The building now holds the borough hall and public library, serving local government and educational needs.

Built in 1888 by Lambert & Bunnell construction firm, this house replaced an older tavern that previously occupied the site. It was commissioned by New York businessman Daniel Robert and drew inspiration from a renowned architectural design that originated elsewhere.

The house reflects how wealthy businessmen of the late 1800s shaped their homes and which architectural styles they valued. Today it serves the community as a public space, having transformed from a private residence into a building that belongs to everyone.

The building is open to the public as it houses the borough hall and library, though visiting hours vary depending on which service you need. Keep in mind this is an active government building, not simply a historic site to tour.

The house was modeled after a celebrated design that was originally created for a different property in Connecticut, where the original building no longer stands. This means Somerville gained an architectural treasure through the creative reuse of a brilliant idea.
