Lake Mendota Boathouse, Boathouse on Lake Mendota, Madison, US
The Bernard-Hoover Boathouse sits on Lake Mendota's shore and features two brick towers with Prairie School style roofs and arched windows. The structure serves as a hub for water sports activities and boat access within this lakeside park setting.
The structure was built in 1915 as Madison's first major commercial boating facility, operating steamboat excursions with vessels Anne and Columbia. Its architectural vision helped shape the city's early water sports infrastructure and lakeside recreation culture.
The boathouse remains active through the Mendota Rowing Club, which has operated rowing programs here since 1975 and keeps the region's water sports spirit alive. Visitors can observe athletes and training activities directly on the lake.
The boathouse is located in James Madison Park and is easily accessible on foot from downtown, with parking areas and pathways along the shoreline. Visitors should plan to arrive during warmer months when water sports activities are in full swing.
The original structure was designed by a renowned architect who won a competition held by the Madison Park and Pleasure Drive Association. This competition was a pivotal moment in the city's park design history and helped establish architectural standards for public waterfront spaces.
