Churchill Building, Commercial high-rise building in Madison, Wisconsin
The Churchill Building is a nine-story structure at North Carroll Street featuring Beaux-Arts architecture with stone facades and balanced design elements. Inside, two elevators serve the floors, and the building sits at a key intersection in downtown Madison.
Construction began in 1915 and it became Madison's first tall building of this scale. After its completion, the city introduced height restrictions that affected future development near the Capitol.
The building shows how Madison grew during the early industrial era and brought new architecture to the downtown core. You can see how the city expressed its importance as a trade center by building in a modern style.
The building is centrally located and easy to reach on foot, with several bus stops and parking options nearby. The area is busy during daytime hours, especially during work times, when people move between offices and the street.
After completion, the building became the reason for a new city ordinance that shaped development across the entire downtown. It remains the last high-rise without these later height restrictions and shows a rare freedom in urban growth.
