Hans Christian Heg, Bronze Civil War memorial statue at State Capitol Square, Madison, United States
The monument depicts an officer in military uniform oriented eastward toward the Wisconsin State Capitol building. The bronze figure stands on the east side of Capitol Square, forming a central focal point within the historic plaza.
The monument was created in 1926 by sculptor Paul Fjelde and honors a Norwegian immigrant who commanded an infantry regiment during the Civil War. Its creation reflected efforts to recognize military service and immigrant contributions to the nation.
The monument reflects the role of Scandinavian immigrants in the American Civil War and their place in Wisconsin's history. It stands as a visible reminder of how European newcomers became part of the state's founding generation.
The monument sits on the east side of Capitol Square, easily found at the corner of East Main Street and King Street. The location is freely accessible on foot and sits near other historic sites around the plaza.
The monument was damaged during 2020 social unrest and subsequently underwent full restoration. It returned to its original location in 2021 after being carefully repaired.
