Principal Riverwalk, Recreation area and thoroughfare in Downtown Des Moines, United States.
Principal Riverwalk is a continuous pedestrian system along both sides of the Des Moines River in downtown. It connects various neighborhoods through paved paths and bridges with landscaped edges and open areas.
The project emerged from a partnership between Des Moines city, the financial company Principal, and the state of Iowa. The completed pathway system opened to the public in 2013.
The pathways feature public art installations and planted areas that invite visitors to explore and linger. The space draws locals who walk, meet, and spend time by the river throughout the day.
The paths are flat, wide, and well-maintained, making them easy to walk and accessible for visitors of all abilities. Spring through fall offers the most pleasant conditions, when the weather cooperates and the grounds are active.
Seasonal activity zones transform the space: a skating rink appears in winter, while a fountain plaza activates during warm months. A built-in amphitheater along the waterfront hosts regular live events and community gatherings.
