Vernon Wildlife Area, Protected area in Waukesha County, United States
Vernon Wildlife Area is a protected conservation area in Waukesha County featuring extensive wetlands, woodlands, and grassland habitats. These diverse landscapes support many native species and provide access to natural spaces for outdoor recreation.
The area was established in 1946 when the first land parcel was leased for public hunting. Over decades, it gradually expanded and developed into a comprehensive conservation area.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources manages this area as part of the Southern Kettle Moraine Region, maintaining natural resources for future generations.
Multiple trails are accessible throughout the year for hiking, bird watching, fishing, and other outdoor activities in designated areas. Visitors should come prepared for seasonal conditions and bring appropriate clothing and gear.
Within the area sits Vernon Fen, a specialized wetland with calcareous soils, natural springs, and rare sedge plant communities found nowhere else in the region. This boggy zone offers a rare look at a very specific habitat type with plants seldom seen elsewhere.
