The Pioneers Park Nature Center extends across 668 acres of tallgrass prairie, woodlands, and wetlands, featuring over eight miles of hiking trails through diverse habitats.
The nature center opened in 1963 as a 40-acre wildlife sanctuary with a single naturalist, gradually expanding through land donations including the Verley Prairie in 1996.
The center maintains the Cunningham School and Hudson Cabin as educational structures that demonstrate the regional pioneer heritage through scheduled programs.
The center operates Monday through Saturday from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM and Sundays from noon to 5:00 PM, with free admission and suggested donations of $3 per person.
The Prairie Building incorporates sustainable features such as straw-bale construction, geothermal heating, and a green roof, demonstrating environmental construction methods.
