Powers Building, Office building in downtown Rochester, United States.
The Powers Building is a nine-story office building at the corner of West Main and State Streets in downtown Rochester, New York. It features Second Empire details such as ornate cornices and a mansard roofline that set it apart from nearby buildings.
The building was completed in 1870 as Rochester's first large fireproof structure, a significant step forward in construction safety at the time. It was also the first building in the city to install an elevator, marking a turning point in how tall buildings were used.
The fifth floor once housed one of the state's largest private art galleries, showcasing works collected during European travels. This space shaped the city's cultural life and brought refined collections to the community.
The building sits in the heart of downtown Rochester and is easy to reach on foot from many points in the central area. The best way to take in the facade details is to step back from the sidewalk and look up at the cornices and roofline from street level.
Between 1872 and 1890, the owner raised the mansard roof three times and added two towers, each time in response to a taller rival appearing nearby. This string of additions was driven entirely by the desire to stay the tallest building in the city.
