Bevier Memorial Building
Bevier Memorial Building, School building in Rochester, United States
The Bevier Memorial Building is a four-story brick structure with ceramic trim located at 42 South Washington Street in Rochester's Cascade District. Today the structure contains 15 residential apartments and approximately 5,000 square feet of commercial space along with parking and bike storage facilities.
This structure was built in 1910 through the will of Susan Bevier, widow of a brewery owner, who wished to honor her late husband's memory. The building received National Register recognition in 1973 for its architectural contribution to the city's history.
The building once housed the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute School of Applied Arts, a school focused on teaching crafts and practical skills. This institution evolved into a major technical university that continues to operate today.
The building is located in a central neighborhood and easily accessible from the street. Keep in mind that this is an active residential and commercial building, so access to the interior may be limited.
Architect Claude Fayette Bragdon incorporated Arts and Crafts movement principles into the design, making it an example of this design philosophy in local architecture. The use of hand-crafted ceramic details reflects the appreciation for craftsmanship central to this style.
