Greenfield Bridge, Deck arch bridge in Pittsburgh, US
Description
Greenfield Bridge is a deck arch structure spanning Four Mile Run valley and connecting Greenfield and Squirrel Hill neighborhoods. The crossing features a 30-foot-wide roadway painted in green steel, two sidewalks, and dedicated bicycle paths designed to accommodate various forms of traffic.
History
The structure replaced a wooden crossing that collapsed in 1921, with concrete construction completing in 1923. The previous version served until 2015 when complete reconstruction became necessary due to structural concerns.
Culture
The bridge links two neighborhoods that have relied on this crossing for generations. Local residents recognize the green-painted steel elements as a landmark that shapes how people navigate and identify with the area.
Practical
Pedestrians and cyclists have dedicated routes separated from vehicle traffic, making the crossing straightforward and safe. Both approaches to the bridge are easily accessible regardless of how you choose to cross.
Did you know?
Ornamental stone elements from the original bridge were carefully preserved and reincorporated during the 2017 reconstruction. These rescued details maintain a tangible link to the crossing's earlier history.
