Natchez City Cemetery, Historic burial ground in Adams County, United States
Natchez City Cemetery is a burial ground located along the bluffs above the Mississippi River, stretching across more than 100 acres with numerous marble headstones and iron decorations throughout. The grounds feature various sections with different grave markers and ornamental styles that span multiple time periods.
The cemetery was established in 1822 when authorities moved remains from downtown Natchez, private plantation grounds, and church burial sites to the current location. This consolidation created a single place where all community members could be laid to rest.
The cemetery contains separate sections for different communities, including a Jewish burial area with markers from the 1800s that reflect the diverse populations who lived in Natchez. These distinct areas show how people of different backgrounds made their home in this river town.
The grounds open daily at 7 AM and stay open until dusk, with self-guided materials available at the main office to help you explore. The entrance is off Cemetery Road in Natchez, making it straightforward to find and navigate on foot.
The iron fences, benches, and mausoleum doors throughout the grounds display a range of metalwork styles created by American craftspeople in the 1800s. These pieces show the skilled detail work that artisans put into their cemetery designs.
