Commercial Bank and Banker's House
Commercial Bank and Banker's House, Greek Revival bank building in Natchez, United States.
The Commercial Bank is a Greek Revival bank building in Natchez featuring a stone facade with four Ionic columns supporting a full entablature and gabled pediment on Main Street. The L-shaped property combines both banking premises and an adjoining residential section into a single connected structure.
The structure was built in 1833 and served as Mississippi's first bank, supporting early financial operations of the state. It later transformed and became a Christian Science congregation center in the 1970s.
The building displays hand-carved door surrounds and window frames that reflect the design tastes of 1830s Mississippi society. These ornamental details remain visible throughout the structure and shape its overall character.
The property occupies 206 Main Street and 107 Canal Street, forming a connected complex across both locations. Visitors should note that the joined spaces represent the full original design and are worth exploring in their entirety.
The limestone walls feature scored plaster creating the appearance of large stone blocks across the entire facade. This visual technique was a common design trick of the era, showcasing the builders' craftsmanship and resourcefulness.
