Mësonjëtorja, School and museum in Korçë, Albania
Mësonjëtorja is a historic school building and museum in Korça, Albania, that displays teaching materials and classroom furniture from the 19th century. The exhibition includes old Albanian textbooks, writing slates, wooden school benches, and teaching tools from the founding period.
The schoolhouse opened in 1887 during Ottoman rule, after earlier teaching attempts had taken place from 1840 onward. It was the first institution where Albanian children could officially be taught in their own language.
This schoolhouse marks the start of teaching in Albanian, when children could learn to read and write in their own language for the first time. The rooms show what a classroom looked like more than a century ago and how teachers and pupils spent their days.
The museum sits in central Korça, not far from the cathedral, and is easy to reach on foot. Information panels are available in both Albanian and English, which helps foreign visitors understand the displays.
A separate room is dedicated to the patriots and displays original photographs documenting the development of Albanian education across several generations. This collection offers a rare visual glimpse into the faces and stories of the teachers and pupils who laid the foundation for national culture.
