Kirchenruine Dambeck, Romanesque church ruins in Bütow, Germany.
Kirchenruine Dambeck is a stone church structure standing near Dambecker See that preserves walls showcasing late Romanesque architectural features. The building displays characteristic elements of its original style across its remaining walls and foundation.
The church was built around 1180 as a fortified structure and remains the oldest church building in southern Mecklenburg. Major damage came in 1649 when the thatched roof collapsed, followed by a lightning strike in 1954 that caused further harm.
The restored choir still serves as a place for religious ceremonies, with annual Pentecost services and baptisms held for the local Massow parish. This active use keeps the ruins connected to the faith life of the community.
The ruins are located at Am Dambecker See in Bütow and are accessible on foot, with guided tours available. Contact kirchenruine.dambeck@aol.com for visitor information and arrangements.
A local conservation group raised approximately 364000 euros over ten years specifically to restore this building. This remarkable fundraising effort demonstrates the deep commitment of residents to preserving such an old structure.
