Stadtmauer Wismar, Medieval fortification walls in Wismar, Germany
The city wall of Wismar is a medieval fortification system that protected the old town and featured around 36 towers. Today individual stone sections remain that show defensive structures and ramparts.
Construction of the first stone fortifications began in 1276 and continued over centuries. By the 15th century the structure had reached its largest extent with complete defensive capability.
The remaining wall sections form part of today's townscape and show how important Wismar was during the Middle Ages. You can see in these stones the visible history of a wealthy trading city.
You can walk along the preserved wall sections in the Lindengarten area and see the stone structures directly. The paths are open to walk and the sections are easily reached from the town center.
Between 1830 and 1835 part of the former Swedish fortification was transformed into a public green space. A defensive structure became the now popular Rosenpromenade walkway.
