Silvesterkapelle

Silvesterkapelle sits outside the walled old town of Überlingen and displays a simple building form with tall Gothic windows along its south side. The interior contains wall paintings that can be viewed by visitors.

The chapel was built around 840 by an Alemannic count and originally held relics of an early Christian martyr. Later it became known for its wall paintings created by artists from Reichenau Monastery.

The walls inside display frescoes from the early medieval period showing scenes from Jesus' life. These paintings come from artists connected to Reichenau Monastery and reveal how important this religious community was for art at that time.

Access to the chapel is seasonal and usually arranged through the Überlingen tourism office. It is best to ask ahead since opening times can change.

A Latin inscription written by an abbot from Reichenau Monastery remains visible on the chapel walls. This rare written record shows the direct link between this sanctuary and the famous artistic community of the monastery.
