Tabacalera, Gijón, Former tobacco factory and convent in Cimadevilla, Spain

The Tabacalera building occupies an entire block in the old town of Gijón, featuring a grand rectangular structure with multiple interior courtyards.

Built in 1670 as an Augustinian convent, the building transformed into a tobacco factory in 1843, operating until its closure in 2002.

The structure contains a Roman cistern from the 3rd century, discovered during excavations between 2006 and 2009, measuring 6 meters on each side.

Located in Plaza Periodista Arturo Arias, the building will open in 2027 as Tabacalera Espacio de Cultura Contemporánea with galleries and exhibition spaces.

The factory witnessed the first female workers' strike in Asturias in 1903, led by cigar makers demanding better working conditions.
