Nothe Fort, Victorian military fort in Weymouth, England.
Nothe Fort is a military fortification in Weymouth on the south coast of England. The structure spreads across three levels with underground ammunition magazines, ground-level casemates, and upper artillery positions, where visitors encounter military equipment and historical artifacts.
The fort was built between 1860 and 1872 by Royal Engineers to protect Portland Harbor during a period of naval expansion. This era saw Britain reinforcing its coastal defenses against potential threats.
The fort displays 19th-century military design with its heavy stone walls and underground passages that visitors can still explore today. These structures show how coastal defense worked during that era.
Access to the fort takes visitors through multiple exhibition spaces displaying military equipment and historical information about different conflicts. Wear sturdy shoes since the underground areas are uneven and contain narrow staircases.
During the 2012 Olympic sailing events, the fort served as a strategic observation post with 150 maritime safety marshals on duty. This modern use shows how the historic structure remains practical for contemporary purposes.
