Church of Saint Mary

Church of Saint Mary is an Anglican place of worship in Woburn featuring a raised chancel positioned above the nave with French Gothic design elements throughout. The interior displays muted tones and contains several artistically significant windows and altar furnishings that enhance the space.

This place of worship was constructed between 1865 and 1868 under architect Henry Clutton and funded by the 8th Duke of Bedford. Its creation reflected the desire of a wealthy nobleman to build a modern church according to contemporary tastes.

The east window holds stained glass created by Charles Eamer Kempe in 1894, positioned above a gilded reredos crafted in Oberammergau. These artistic choices reflect how wealthy patrons decorated their places of worship with works by renowned craftspeople of the time.

The church tower originally held a bell weighing 2,800 kilograms, which was recorded as the largest in any English parish church of that era. This impressive weight made it a standout feature of the structure.
