Birmingham Municipal Bank headquarters, Grade II listed bank building on Broad Street, Birmingham, England
The Birmingham Municipal Bank headquarters is a neoclassical stone building with bronze details located at Centenary Square in central Birmingham. The structure features a grand facade and internal spaces that originally served banking operations but now function for education and community use.
The building was designed by architect Thomas Cecil Howitt and completed in 1933 as the headquarters of the Birmingham Municipal Bank. The institution operated there until 1976, when it was converted into a trustee savings bank.
The former banking hall now serves as a venue for exhibitions and community events organized by the University of Birmingham. You can see how the space has been transformed to bring people together for cultural activities.
The building is accessible through front and rear entrances and houses educational facilities, a public cafe, and exhibition spaces. Visitors can explore the interior at their own pace and take advantage of facilities located at both entrances.
The original banking vaults still exist beneath street level and visitors can access them to see how money was secured and stored in the early 1900s. These underground chambers show the practical side of banking that most people never experience.
