Grand Ocean, Saltdean, Grade II listed hotel in Saltdean, England.
Grand Ocean is a white curved building on the Sussex coast in Saltdean, designed in the 1930s modernist style and listed as a Grade II protected structure. It stands at the corner of Longridge Avenue and Arundel Drive West, and the former hotel now contains residential apartments.
The building opened in 1938 as a hotel and was taken over during World War II to serve as a training centre for the fire service. After the war it became a holiday camp before eventually being converted into the apartments it contains today.
The curved white facade is a clear example of the seaside architectural style that became popular along the English coast in the 1930s. Visitors walking past today can still see the original balconies that give the building its recognizable shape.
The building is easy to spot from the Saltdean seafront and straightforward to reach on foot from the nearby coastal path. Since it is now a residential building, visitors can only see it from the outside, which the street level allows without any difficulty.
The original hotel had an outdoor swimming pool that was a notable draw for guests arriving from across the south of England. Nothing of it remains today, making the curved building itself the only visible trace of what was once a seaside destination.
