Green Castle, Portknockie, Iron Age fort in Portknockie, Scotland
Green Castle is an Iron Age fort situated on a rocky coastal headland in Scotland, surrounded by stone walls and earthen defenses. The site rises about 20 meters above sea level and occupies a relatively narrow ridge.
The fort was inhabited across multiple centuries, beginning around 1000 BC. During the Pictish period it was fortified with timber-laced stone ramparts, before occupation ended with Viking arrival around 1000 AD.
The name refers to the green hills surrounding this coastal headland. Visitors today can still trace the outline of the old fortification in the landscape.
The site is reachable via a track from Patrol Road heading toward the harbor. Sturdy footwear is recommended as the path crosses rocky terrain and the headland is exposed to the elements.
Excavations uncovered evidence of metalworking, including molds and smithing tools that hint at skilled craftspeople. These artifacts reveal that residents possessed advanced technical knowledge for their time.
