Dartford Heath, Park in England

Dartford Heath is an open common land park in southeast England, made up of lowland heath, broadleaved woodland, acid grassland, and three ponds. The terrain rolls gently across the area, with patches of heather, gorse, and scattered trees throughout.

Records from 1660 show the heath was already used for community gatherings, including ceremonies held in honor of King Charles II. The first recorded cricket match in Dartford also took place here, in 1723, pointing to a long tradition of public use.

The three ponds on this land are familiar landmarks for local residents, especially Donkey Pond, named after the donkeys that once drank there. Every spring, the ponds fill with frogspawn, and people often stop to watch.

The heath is open at all times of year, though the ground is uneven in many areas and can be tricky to navigate with a pushchair or wheelchair. At least one accessible route is available, so it is worth planning your path before arriving.

One part of the heath contains low earthen mounds known locally as the Glory Bumps, which are the remains of old clay pits once dug for brick making. The three ponds on the site often dry out completely in summer, then refill each spring with frogspawn and water insects.
