Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum, Heritage museum in Shukrawar Peth, Pune, India
The Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum occupies a three-story building that houses over 20,000 objects from across India, including wooden furniture, musical instruments, and textiles. The rooms are organized by theme, with each area displaying a different category of crafts or household items.
Dr. Dinkar Kelkar founded this house in 1920 as a memorial to his son Raja, beginning with a modest collection in a single room. Over the decades, the collection grew steadily until several exhibition halls were added to accommodate all the acquired pieces.
Everyday items from Indian households show how people in different regions lived and worked. The collection ranges from kitchen tools and oil lamps to instruments that craftsmen used across generations.
The house opens every day of the week and offers guided tours in several languages. The exhibitions are divided into dedicated sections for musical instruments, textiles, and decorative arts, allowing visitors to explore specific topics.
A full-scale replica of the Mastani Mahal was brought piece by piece from Kothrud and reassembled inside the building. The wooden structure offers a look into the architecture of noble residences from past centuries.
