Kaulas Fort, Medieval fort in Kamareddy district, Telangana, India
Kaulas Fort is a medieval fortress in Kamareddy, in the northern part of Telangana state, with thick stone walls, many bastions, and several interior chambers. It has two main entrances and sits within a natural landscape that was once part of its defense.
The fort was built in the 9th century under the Rashtrakuta dynasty and passed through several ruling powers over the following centuries. Chalukyas, Kakatiyas, Bahmanis, and the Nizams each held control until Telangana was absorbed into the Indian Union in 1948.
The temples inside the fort display sculptures that mix southern Dravidian and Indo-Islamic styles in the same stonework. Looking closely at the carvings, visitors can see how different craft traditions grew side by side in one place.
The fort is north of Hyderabad and is best reached by private vehicle since public transport options in the area are limited. Sturdy footwear is recommended, as the site has uneven stone surfaces and open areas that take some time to walk through.
Inside the fort stands the Navgarji tope, one of the largest cannons of its era, cast during the rule of Raja Gopal Singh Gaur. Despite its size, many visitors walk past it because it sits deep inside the grounds and is easy to miss.
