Barid Shahi Tombs, Royal mausoleum complex in Bidar district, India
The Barid Shahi Tombs form a complex of several structures with green granite domes rising above the surrounding land, built from green granite and laterite stone. The buildings rest on thick pillars and create a connected burial ground for the ruling family.
The tombs were built during the 16th and 17th centuries to honor members of the Barid Shahi family, who ruled the region from 1492 to 1695. They were created during a period when the family was establishing its power in the Deccan region.
The mausoleums show a blend of Indian and Islamic building styles with hand-carved stone flower designs and calligraphic patterns visible throughout the walls and ceilings.
The site is easy to spot and the structures are grouped together on open ground that is accessible from all sides. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since they will spend time walking between the different mausoleums and exploring their details.
The burial chamber of Ali Barid Shah has a wide platform to the southwest where additional graves are located, which reveals the social structure of the family during that period. This separate grave site shows the different ranks and roles among family members.
