Osman Sagar, Water reservoir in Ranga Reddy district, India
Osman Sagar is a reservoir in Ranga Reddy district, about 20 kilometers west of Hyderabad, formed by a dam across the Musi River. The body of water extends over hilly terrain with terraced parks and landscaped greenery along the shoreline.
Construction began in 1912 as a response to the devastating 1908 flood that ravaged Hyderabad, and was completed in 1920 under Mir Osman Ali Khan. The dam was meant to prevent flooding while also providing drinking water to the growing city.
The name honors Mir Osman Ali Khan, the last Nizam of Hyderabad, who commissioned the dam. Local families spend weekends here, and many visitors enjoy the gardens along the water's edge.
The reservoir is accessible daily from 09:30 to 19:00, with an entrance fee of around 50 rupees. The nearest railway station is Nagalapalli, 7 kilometers away, and from there taxis or local buses reach the site easily.
M. Visvesvaraya, one of India's most celebrated engineers, designed the reservoir system with innovative techniques for the time. The nearby Sagar Mahal once served as a summer residence for the Nizams and is now a heritage hotel.
