Akiyoshidai International Art Village, Art colony and arts centre in Mine, Japan

Akiyoshidai International Art Village is an art colony and arts centre located in the town of Mine, in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. It consists of several separate buildings, including a performance hall for around 300 people, a residence block for up to 100 guests, studios, a gallery, and a restaurant.

The village opened in 1998, founded by the local government as a public facility to support artistic work and exchange. It was set up to bring artists from around the world into the rural region of Yamaguchi and foster connections between Japanese and international creators.

The village was designed by architect Arata Isozaki as an archipelago, with separate buildings arranged like small islands across the landscape. This layout encourages artists from different countries to work side by side and share their work with visitors at the end of their stay.

The site sits close to the natural sights of the Akiyoshidai plateau, so a visit can be paired with exploring the surrounding area. Events and exhibitions run throughout the year, so it is worth checking the official website in advance for what is on during your stay.

The concert hall was designed specifically for Luigi Nono's work Prometeo, in which sound does not come from a single point but spreads from many directions at once. Anyone who enters the hall experiences an effect that feels quite different from any ordinary concert space.
