Lock, lock gates and swing-bridge, forming Large Lock, Vale Royal, Historic lock and swing bridge in Davenham, United Kingdom
The large lock with its gates and swing bridge sits on the Weaver River near Davenham, controlling water flow between different levels so boats can pass through. The structure combines a traditional lock chamber with a rotating bridge that allows both vessels and road traffic to cross the waterway.
Built in 1890, this complex was created to support the Weaver Navigation system during Britain's industrial boom. The structure reflects engineering methods of that era designed to improve river transport in the region.
The lock complex demonstrates Victorian engineering principles and holds Grade II listed status in the National Register of Historic Buildings.
Boats using this lock must fit within maximum dimensions of roughly 10 meters in length and 3.6 meters in height measured from water level. The swing bridge rotates slowly to alternate between allowing river traffic and road crossings, so allow extra time when visiting.
What makes this site unusual is that the rotating bridge handles two different types of traffic at the same location: river vessels and road vehicles. This dual-purpose design solved a real problem for 19th-century transportation needs in the area.
