Naturdenkmal Scham-Maulbeerbaum, Natural monument in Peć, Serbia.
The Scham mulberry tree is a natural monument in the courtyard of the Patriarchate of Peć in southwestern Serbia, standing taller than eight meters with a broad crown. The specimen displays a dark-barked, gnarled structure whose thick trunks and branches bear witness to its advanced age.
The tree became a place of historical gathering in 1690 when Patriarch Arsenije III met people under its branches to discuss the migration movement toward Vojvodina. This moment tied the tree to a turning point in regional history.
The tree stands in the courtyard of the Patriarchate of Peć and serves as a symbol of connection between nature and spirituality for local visitors. People come to this location to experience the presence of a living witness to history and to show respect for its longevity.
The tree is located within the monastery grounds and is easiest to visit during the opening hours of the Patriarchate. Visitors should be aware that this is a sacred site where respectful behavior is expected.
The tree is approximately 750 years old and survived a lightning strike in the mid-20th century that split its trunk. Despite this damage, the mulberry continues to produce fruit and grow new shoots, demonstrating its resilience.
