Shkelzeni Peak, Mountain peak in Tropoja, Albania
Shkelzeni Peak is a mountain summit in the Accursed Mountains located at the border between Kosovo and Albania, rising to 2,404 meters. The peak stands within a rugged alpine zone where rocky slopes and narrow valleys shape the surrounding terrain.
The peak was shaped by its border location, remaining difficult to reach from one side for many years due to territorial restrictions. The geopolitical situation between the two countries affected how people could access the mountain.
Local tribes in the region practice traditional sheep herding near the mountain, moving their flocks seasonally according to weather conditions.
Two main routes reach the summit: one starts from Gjakova in Kosovo and another from Bajram Curri in Albania via the village of Hoxhaj. The climb requires solid fitness and mountain experience, especially in the upper sections where the terrain becomes rocky and steep.
Between 1,800 and 2,200 meters, a notably challenging rocky section demands significant elevation gain over steep slopes. This area stands out as both the highlight and the toughest part of the climb for most hikers.
